Rome Lodging Review

Arco del Lauro Bed and Breakfast, Trastevere (Rome)

This B&B is now recommended by Rick Steves and is probably booked far in advance.  We chose it because we liked staying in Trastevere in 2007.  It was easy to make the reservation by email and the deposit by paypal.  We paid our bill in cash but I think they accept credit cards through paypal.  The price of 135 Euro/night with breakfast included was fair.

The room was small, but that is as expected in a major European city.  The bed was comfortable but the pillows were super hard--unfortunately all of the pillows on this trip were too hard for me...  It had AC but the window in our room opened onto a small courtyard and we left the window open two out of our three nights.  I'd recommend closing the window and turning on the AC--less humidity and quieter for sleeping.

The bathroom was small but fitted out well.  It had small shelves over the sink and hooks for towels.  There was enough space in the shower for a small shelf to hold toiletries but instead we had to put our stuff on the floor.  Installing a shelf in the shower would be an inexpensive fix that would make the shower much better.

There are two doors to get into the B&B before you reach your room and those locks are really loud.  The jingling of the keys woke me up one night.  There's probably nothing they can do about this, though. It was nice to have the fridge with sweet snacks and drinks and coffee near the room.

The reception by Daniella was very friendly; we didn't meet any one else while we were there.  She was helpful with directions but less so with restaurant recommendations as our arrival day was a Sunday and every place she mentioned nearby was closed.  At times we had questions for reception but they were only available until 2pm.

The location in Trastevere is quiet.  It's relatively convenient to central sights but we ended up taking cabs more than on previous trips. We had a long walk to the Metro one day and didn't feel like waiting for the tram another day.  I don't think we'll stay in Trastevere on a return trip.  We like the location of Residenza Cellini better but the prices there are very high now as compared to 2007!

Overall, I rate Arco del Lauro 4 out of 5 stars.  I'd definitely recommend it and would consider it for a future trip.
